Don’t Overlook Alt Tags

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

What are ALT tags?

ALT tags are the little rectangular boxes of text that appear when you place your cursor over an image. The text will be shown in browsers which cannot display images, or if the user has chosen not to view images. Some search engines use this text to capture keywords for the web-page.

Audiences for ALT tags:

* Sighted readers who choose to browse the web without graphics being displayed
* Blind and sighted readers who access a page using audio-based browser technologies
* Automated indexing programs utilize ALT text as part of the page’s contents

Some of the biggest website promotion casualties on the World Wide Web are documents whose authors didn’t take the indexing robots seriously. T he indexing robot is one of the most important readers of your website. Since graphics cannot be interpreted by web crawlers ALT tags improve Search Engine Optimization of your website because they associate a keyword with a graphic.

Unlike ALT tags, META tags do not produce any visible spin off for your text-mode human readers. Effort spent on your ALT texts produces benefits for both kinds of “reader”. There has been so much abuse of the META tags that certain indexers now ignore the META entirely, or apply strict disqualification rules to avoid getting fooled by that kind of trickery.

Tips for creating ALT Tags:

* Keep Text Short

Extremely long ALT text can ruin page-formatting for sighted readers browsing non-graphically. This is especially true in tables, where overly long ALT text can quickly render a page un-navigable for non-graphical readers.

* Keep Text Meaningful

Meaningless ALT text is probably worse than no ALT text. It’s important that ALT text be meaningful in and of itself. ALT text that is meaningful in itself helps guide readers to your page by way of automated indexers that read and understand ALT text.

* Discard Decorations

In this context, “decoration” really refers to two things:

* Truly decorative images (which convey no content)

* Buttons, bullets, dividers, etc. (which don’t convey content, but do help to organize existing contents).

For images that convey no content, an empty ALT tag (that is, ALT=”") will effectively discard these decorations.

For buttons and bullets, a simple ALT=”*” does the trick nicely. Similarly, ALT=”————-” works well for separator bar graphics (though a simple tag transmits much quicker and doesn’t require ALT text).

* Test ALT Tags

It is easy to test ALT tags. To test your ALT tags, simply disable image-loading in your browser, and tour your site. To hear how your pages sound to audio-based browser technologies, simply read your page aloud, left-to-right, top-to-bottom. If you encounter an image without an ALT tag, say the word “image.”

SEO – A Do-It-Yourself Guide

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Some Search Engine Optimization (SEO) firms can toss around a lot of important terms and promise unbelievable results, but often the results are short-lived and the SEO terms they use are convenient in intimidating the faint of heart into subscribing to their services. After all if you can’t understand what they are saying how are you supposed to understand how to do it yourself?

While it is possible to develop a masterfully designed SEO strategy for use on your website by accessing the skills of others, the truth is paying a third party for work you can do yourself may not be the wisest use of company assets, although most SEO companies would likely dispute my claim since, of course, their livelihood largely depends on your ignorance.

Did you know the primary influence on SEO success is keyword rich content? The content you write and the way that you say it has a profound effect on the way search engines determine your site rankings.

If you take no other advice on SEO take this one and implement it yourself. The primary search engines work to rank sites based on predominant keywords or key phrases.

You will discover that online visitors and search engines agree, great content makes for a great online experience for potential consumers as well as a few good search engines looking for great websites.

Did you know that if you invite others to link to your site the chances of SEO success improve?

Search engines are very favorable to linking strategies. It tells them that others view your site as a worthwhile destination with adequate reason to associate themselves with you in an online environment.

Did you know that developing positive contacts improve site visitation? Did you also know that increased traffic results in improved site ranking?

Search engine companies make locating trusted websites their number one priority. If your website is designed to maximize one or more facets of your business the search engines will view your site as serious about reaching a very specific customer base.

The idea of networking is as important to those you network with as it is to you. This is a business-to-business strategy that can’t really be duplicated by using most paid SEO firms. You have the best handle on whom you are most interested in forming connections with. In the development process there is often mutual back scratching that can ultimately serve to drive traffic to both sites.

Many SEO firms rely on extensive strategies that required their intervention and care. Some of these strategies do have value, but that value is minimized as search engines streamline some of the indicators of site rankings. For instance Meta tag information was once very important to SEO strategies, today many site owners can achieve positive success without significantly altering their meta tag details.

Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of SEO strategies that can help, but content and connections are the two primary means of achieving improved site rankings – and you can do that yourself.

Does Google Own The E World

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

If you are even a casual browser on the internet, it is certain that you have noticed the prevalence of the corporation known as Google. Although their name is essentially synonymous with the search engine’s ability to pull up information from the internet, Google is actually involved in a very wide variety of different things online. Most people, in the course of their daily online activities, will use two or three Google-developed and Google-controlled programs, and many will use even more. Whether you’re hoping to map out a road trip or you are just looking to do some shopping online, it is impossible not to notice how prevalent Google is to our online culture.

“Googling” has become a commonly accepted verb, meaning to use the Google search engine to find something and it is easy to see why Google has become the number one search method that people employ when they are exploring the internet. Current estimates hold that the number of servers that Google has at its disposal number more than 45,000 located at twenty-five locations throughout the world. With this sort of power and search capability at their disposal and with the immense amounts of capital that they have earned from offering advertising to their audience, it is clear that Google’s presence on the internet is a permanent and all encompassing one.

With the advent of Google Mail, Google has offered email to a number of people surpassing the amount of people who use Hotmail or Yahoo. This is not the only web service that Google offers; Orkut is another Google brainchild, as is AdSense. Google is well and truly on its way to becoming an essential part of the internet, if it is not already there. Google can be used to meet many of your internet needs, if not all of them. From Google Maps, which can tell you how to get where you are going to Google Translate, which can translate text to and from its original language, it is clear to see that Google has sunk deeply into the online landscape.

The real star of the show, however, is the Google search engine. This search engine was what brought the company to its original, indispensable place online and it is where much of the money that Google makes from advertising comes from. A recent survey showed that 95 percent of all traffic on the internet was conducted with the use of search engines and that out of that 95 percent, the vast majority of it was conducted through Google. Couple this with the fact that more than 50 percent of all purchases made online went through the Google search engine first, and it is easy to see how Google became an advertising giant.

Through it all, part of Google’s charm is that is corporate policy is well known, that is, that Google believes that it is possible to be profitable without being evil, and that a collaborative environment is much more useful than a hierarchy. Google exists as a sign post for the internet, taking you where you want to go, while still managing to provide many of the answers to the questions that you have been asking.
