Off-Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Primer

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

In the earlier years of search engine optimization, it was all about on-page optimization. Things like the page title, Meta tags, heading tags, comment tags, and anchor text were the only things that mattered. Keyword stuffing could easily get your website to the top of the search engines results page. If I wanted the number one position, all I had to do was copy my competitor’s page, add my keyword one more time, and viola – I’d rank first. These days, things aren’t quite that easy. In order to obtain top positioning in the search results, your website has to gain to credibility or “web cred” in order to be recognized as important.

Optimize Your Domain Name

As of this writing, appears that the search engines do weight the fact that your domain name has your keywords in it. Problem is, many SEO professionals and amateurs are exploiting this by registering domains with the keywords in it, separated by dashes. Nobody knows how long the search engines will continue to weight this factor, but none the less, it’s probably not a bad idea to include a keyword or phrase in your domain name, but don’t get out of hand: www.please-let-google-ban-my-site-because-of-all-these-words.com

The number of years your domain has, and will be, registered for also has an effect on search engine rankings. If you have an older domain name, it is generally concluded that the website is not spam and will probably be around for years to come. This makes sense – Google should give higher priority to a website that’s been around for 5 years, than give the high ranking to a brand new, untested website. It may be a good idea to acquire a domain name that been around for a few years and also contains one of your keywords. The downside is that this option may be expensive. If you don’t have the budget for that, Google also seems to give credit for the number of years that the domain is pre-registered. I’ve looked at some data, and it seems that if you register your domain for a few years out, Google assumes you don’t have a fly-by-night website and you may be entitled to a slightly higher ranking. Given the miniscule cost of registering a domain name these days, it’s probably not a bad idea to register your domain name for 3 years rather than 1.

Page Rank

Google assigns each web page a Page Rank based on the number and quality of inbound links you have pointing to your website. You can view your website’s page rank by downloading the Google Toolbar. Your page rank will be displayed as a green bar measuring from 1 to 10. Don’t worry if you only have a Page Rank of 1 or 2 – most websites do. In order to get your number up (4 or 5 is pretty good), you’ll have to get other websites to link to you.

Quality Counts More Than Quantity

As soon as webmasters realized the importance of back links, numerous schemes were hatched in an attempt to build up thousands back links very quickly. Google has since caught on, and if your website acquires too many low-quality links too fast, you may get penalized. Here are some tips to obtain the best quality back links:

One-way links are better than reciprocal links. Reciprocal links are being de-valued because it is not natural linking – it’s an arrangement between the webmasters. If you can afford it, it may be a good idea to buy some one-way links to your website.

Get links from pages with a high Page Rank because some of that will pass through to your site, increasing your own site’s Page Rank.

Get links from sites in a related industry or geographical location. I do a lot of web design in my home town of Windsor, Ontario. Therefore, I make sure that I buy or trade links from other web design related sites, Canadian, Ontario, and Windsor directories. Google will see that your site is relevant if you do this.

Make sure your keywords are included in the link from other sites. If your keyword is included in the anchor text, Google will assume that your site relates to that particular keyword.

Get a listing in Open Project Directory (DMOZ), if you can. Only the best sites get into DMOZ, and it gives your site a lot of credibility in the eyes of the search engines.

Don’t inter-link your websites! If you think you can just link all of your own websites together and improve your Page Rank, forget it. Google will see that the IP address of all domains is the same, and, either give you little or no credit, or if you have a lot of sites inter-linked, penalize you.

Let last tip I’ll leave you with is: make sure to maintain your links. Google, for one, does not immediately give you credit for your links. The age of the link plays an important role, and as the months go by, those links which were maintained for long periods of time will carry a lot of weight. Good Luck!

Learn The Seo Basics Guidelines For Your Online Website

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It is not very difficult to understand Search Engine optimization and yet it is very important. There are some things that you can do to help your site do better on the Search Engines.

When you are getting started with Search Engine optimization you really should not worry about all of the jargon that is used. The point here is to make things simpler so that Search Engines will like your site better.

There is a pattern and a reason to everything that a Search Engine does. Even if you are unable to understand the complex algorithms, there are still patterns there. You just need to be willing to keep your eyes and mind open in order to look for the patterns.

It is going to take some effort if you want to be good at Search Engine optimization but it really is quite basic. In order to have a successful Search Engine campaign you just need to follow the rules that apply to all web sites.

Search Engines always do their best to provide their users with anything that is relevant to their search. However, most Search Engines do not move the good sites to the top but they do push the bad sites to the bottom in hopes that the good sites will rise to the surface. Of course, content really is king and it will easily provide you with good rankings as long as it is written properly and contains the proper keywords. These articles will attract visitors as well as Search Engine spiders.

One way in which you can develop good content for your site is by adding articles or an ebook that relate to your web site’s topic. Not only will this provide your visitors with relevant information but it will also open up good rankings in new keywords that you otherwise would not rank well for. For instance, if you own a pet site and write about “dog food” then you may do well for those keywords, thus attracting new traffic. This is why you should write in depth articles for your site. In doing so you will benefit greatly.

If you are trying to get your site to be ranked as number one the first thing that you will need to do is find out what your site is currently ranked as. You can do this by looking your site up in the Search Engines and developing a strategy for each of these Search Engines. Remember! Just because you are listed in one Search Engine does not mean that you are listed in another. Search Engines simply do not work this way.

If you take a moment to look at those sites that are currently doing well in the Search Engines you will notice that sites that are easy to navigate, have simple designs and use graphics that only require a small amount of bandwidth are the sites that are ranking high. This is because Search Engines know that their users like simple, clean designs and thus they have designed their spiders to like these sites as well. These sites are preferable because they allow you to get the content that you want without a lot of fuss. Whenever you design a site you should make this your goal.

Of course, there are some sites that are ranked high in the Search Engines even though they have complex designs. With this in mind you can easily see that a site’s design really does not have anything to do with where you will rank in the Search Engines. This is because the only thing that Search Engines are concerned about is text. If your site’s content is relevant to what someone is searching for then this is the only thing that a Search Engine is concerned about.

You may also be wondering about the use of meta tags, keywords, descriptions, and titles. While all of these things are important, they are not what is going to make or break your site. Instead, you should simply view these things as part of your Search Engine strategy. You will need to make these things compelling and they will also need to contain your keywords but they are not the only things that you should be concerned about. Nevertheless, you should know that these things will cause your users to want to click through from the Search Engine to your web site.

In reality, you should start off slowly when you are working with Search Engine optimization and then gradually add new things as you learn them. The best place to learn about Search Engine optimization techniques is on a “SEO forum.” Simply do a search for this on any Search Engine and you will come across a forum wherein people are willing to answer your questions or direct you to some place wherein you can find the answer to your questions.

As you can probably see, understanding Search Engine optimization is not difficult. You will need to be patient though. This very important part of web site marketing will definitely take some time. Nevertheless, you are going to want to do anything that you can in order to make your site do better with the Search Engines. After all, Search Engine traffic is worth its weight in gold.

This hit will be from a promotion on the other sites or a simple great press release about a new product or service. There are only 10 spots on the search engine results pages, imagine if your were receiving traffic from the top 5 listings.

Do It Yourself SEO: Ten Search Engine Optimization Tips (Part 1)

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Using a professional search engine optimization service can sometimes be expensive. However, if your budget is tight and you have a basic understanding of web page construction it is possible to optimize your own website without hiring an SEO specialist. For those who would like to give it a try, here are ten “Do it yourself” search engine optimization tips:

1. Think about SEO right from the start

Many people plan, design and build their websites without giving any thought as to whether their site is search engine friendly or whether it will be capable of attracting traffic in organic search engine results. At the last minute, after most of the site has been built, they try to optimize their site, not realizing that this work should have done throughout the planning and building process.

It is far better to think about search engine optimization at the very beginning of the process. For example, if it is at all possible, choose a domain name that will allow you to include your most important keyword or search term in your URL. If you are selling bicycles then you would do well have to a domain name like www.xyzbicycles.com . And don’t stop with the domain name; include your keywords in your file names as well. For example, a sub-page of this hypothetical site might be www.xyzbicycles.com/road-bikes.html

2. Design your site with both search engines and users in mind

Your site should be easy for your human readers to understand, but it should also be easy for search engine robots as well. If you want to see what a search engine robot will “see” then view your site in a notepad document or use the html view of the popular web editing programs.

If you have used gif images to render your headlines or other important text, then this text will not be picked up by the search engine robots. In addition, if you have designed a site that is entirely in a flash format, you will not be providing the search engine spiders with much “food,” or searchable text.

Furthermore, if you have long strings of java script and complex style instructions in the head section of your html page it is better to put the java script in an external file and the style instructions in a separate CSS (cascading style sheet) file, in order to give prominence to the actual text of your web page.

3. Write individual title tags for each and every page of your website

From the standpoint of search engine optimization, the single most important sentence on any web page is the title tag. The title tag gives the search engine a good indication as to what your page is all about. Incorporate your main keywords or search phrases into your title tag, and keep them at the very front of the sentence. These keywords are more important than your company name (unless it is Coca Cola!). So our XYZ Bicycle Company might have a title tag that looks like this Bicycles: Racing Bikes, Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes, Bicycle Accessories from XYZ Bicycles.

The title tags of each of the sub-pages of the site should reflect the main content of those pages. Never use the same title tag for all the pages of the site.

4. Write a concise description tag for each of your web pages

Just as the title tag is the most important sentence or phrase on any page, the description tag is the most important paragraph on any page. Summarize the gist of your page in two or three pages, again incorporating the keywords and search phrases for which you think people will use when searching for your site. A description tag for the home page of the XYZ Bicycle Company could look like this: “The EXZ Bicycle Company manufactures mountain bikes, racing bicycles, road bikes and bicycle accessories. Our bicycles are distributed and sold around the world. “

5. Put your keywords into headers and headlines on your page

Your human readers and search engines alike need prominent headlines in order to understand what your page is all about. While a human reader only needs to see the headline in a large bold text, search engines distinguish the headlines, which they regard as important indicators of the page, by noting which phrases are encased in header tags such as , , , etc. H1 is considered most important and your first headline should be labeled with this tag. If the header tags make your copy look too big, then you can change the size of the headers by creating style instructions that will render the headlines into sizes that are consistent with the look and feel of your site.

Why Aren’t You Making Money Online? — The Surprising Answer

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Are you promoting something on the Internet, trying hard to sell it, but not making any sales?

Is this because you’re not getting enough traffic? Is it because there’s too much competition? Or is it a failure to generate enough interest because somehow you’re not communicating effectively?

Whatever you think your problem may be, I can guarantee there is a solution. How do I know this? I know it because others ARE making good money online. If others can do it YOU CAN TOO.

- But what is the solution?

This is general information here, because this report will be read by different people… all with different and specific needs. But let’s start by taking a look at your marketing strategy.

You may have certain marketing techniques that you’re using, such as traffic generation or perhaps building a list of prospects. But do you have an overall STRATEGY, or Plan, or Flow Chart of what needs to happen in the process of converting prospects into buyers? Before you work out your flow chart and address specific marketing techniques, have you even properly identified your target market? Do you know who your prospect is? Is it everyone who can fog a mirror, or is it someone wanting a specific solution to a specific problem? You need to be specific because your prospect will only buy specific solutions, not generalisations! Your prospect doesn’t close his eyes and say “I’ll buy from the next website I visit.” In the same way you can’t close your eyes and say “Any customer will do, it doesn’t matter if they want this or not, because this is a great opportunity (or a better health solution, or whatever).” It’s much better to work out the exact problem you can best solve, and target those people who MOST need your solution.

Also, can you tell people why they should buy from you and not someone else? What makes you different to your competitors? These are questions you need to answer before you even look at building a sales flow chart. Can you give an answer for why you exist for your customer, in preference to the shop who sells the same product next door? What makes you any different? You MUST come up with a plausible answer to this. As the saying goes, “Differentiate or Die!”

Your strategy needs to include an understanding of your prospect. You need to know what his problems are, and what his area of pain is. If you can identify his pain, and fix his pain, and show him that you really can help him, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t buy from you. The basics of any sales process will use the AIDA formula. AIDA stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. Your overall strategy should include a flow chart that takes your prospect through these AIDA buying steps, but those steps only list what to do. They still don’t tell you how to do it - especially on the Internet!

How do you get your prospects full attention when every other marketer and his dog and cat are competing with you for it online?

How do you interest your prospect enough to stay with you until you have time to create a desire for whatever it is you’re selling?

How do you make your prospect desire your solution enough — so much so that they will actually take action and buy it? How can you do it without lying to your prospect or deceiving them?

So, why aren’t you making money online? How can you if you haven’t answered the above questions?

Is THIS the surprising answer to why you’re not making money online?… Is it that you actually don’t have a clue what you’re doing, but you really need to find out? — If so, please take a look at the information you can access through the author’s link below.

I hope I’ve given you something to consider here, and that it makes sense. Let me know what you think.
