Increase Your Google Adsense Earnings Part 1 - ECPM

Monday, August 24th, 2009

If you have been earning money from your blog or websites with Google AdSense, you might be interested in some simple tips that can help you get more money from the same traffic you are getting now. What? Shouldn’t you be concentrating on more traffic?

It’s always great to find more sources for traffic, and you should continue to work on your Search Engine Optimization, and on getting inbound links to your pages to bring targeted visitors to your site.

But chances are there are some simple things you can do to your pages to improve the Click Thru Rate (CTR) and the value of each visitor (eCPM). If you can raise your eCPM by 50%, for example, it will have the same bottom line effect as leaving the eCPM the same and raising the traffic by 50%.

And if you raise your eCPM and your traffic continues to increase, you will make even more money!

eCPM is a number that appears in our AdSense earning reports, and it is computer from your CTR and the average amount you earn from an ad click. It’s an estimate of how much you earn from each 1,000 page views (not clicks).

So if your eCPM is $10.00, and one hundred thousand visitors come to your pages, you can expect to earn about $1000 (100 times $10).

The value of eCPM as a measurement tool is that it lets you take your attention from individual clicks, and think of the value of the page to advertisers – and to your visitors.

Your eCPM is likely to vary a lot from day to day unless you have a large number of clicks each day (hundreds, or even thousands). For most smaller sites, it is good to look at eCPM for 7 days at a time, or even a month. You can easily pick a period to look at by selecting the time period from the drop down box in the AdSense reports.

Your eCPM will rise if your CTR increases while the price of an average ad stays the same. It can also increase if the price of an average ad increases while the CTR stays the same.

And of course, in the best of all possible worlds, both your CTR increases, and the average value of an ad.

Think of eCPM as like a temperature measurement, but of the advertising value of your pages.

There are two basic principles to improving your eCPM, and those will be the subject of the next two articles in this series. The first is making the format and layout of your pages more friendly to ad serving, and the second is to focus your content and your visitors better to attract more highly targeted ads.

While at first blush it might seem these are ‘tricks’ to increase AdSense revenue at the cost of your site’s quality, that really isn’t so. The same things that improve your site for AdSense, will improve the visitor’s experience of your site.

We will talk about this soon. In the meantime, take a look at your eCPM, and start thinking about what you can do to increase it.

Who’s Afraid Of Internet Marketing?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

It’s no wonder so many business owners have the ultimate desire to employee a marketing director. There are so many different means and methods to marketing a company to the public it can be difficult, at best, to mange them all and run a business.

There are certain elements that share a commonality between traditional marketing and online marketing, but there are elements to Internet marketing that may seem foreign to the sensibilities of a traditional marketing specialist.

Some of the more common themes are news items such as press releases that encourage the news media and interested individuals to keep up your firm’s latest news. There is also the general commonality of simply getting your name in front of people. The differences often come in the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of marketing and not the ‘what’ and ‘should’.

Most businesses understand the need to get people tuned into what their business is doing. Long standing brick and mortar marketing principles would suggest traditional media outlets such as newsprint, radio or television as obvious choices. While these media outlets certainly have a place in marketing, the bulk of successful Internet marketing happens online.

Marketing for the web requires an understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques along with linkable connections scattered throughout the web. What this means is that every time you post on a blog or forum you should make sure a link to your business is included in the signature box. This also means you ask business associates to consider placing a link to your site on their websites.

One of the most cost effective means of advertising your online business will be Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising. This is one of the smallest advertisements you will ever see, but they are highly targeted so you have the best chance of reaching prospects that can be turned to customers.

Internet marketing may also mean developing knowledge-based articles or ezines that can readily connect with your customers. Many site owners have either personally developed articles or hired a freelance writer to produce an ebook on the subject of their business that can be passed along to members of their site either through autoresponders or as part of an opt-in membership. These members help you establish a mailing list online. List building techniques include offering a freebie to customers and often result in a very low cost means of growing your contact list.

Internet marketing is vitally important to the establishment and growth of your ecommerce site, but it may require learning a new language and developing new marketing skills. If you can’t afford a marketing specialist you can still learn the skills needed to grow your site into a premier online ecommerce destination.

Creating A Successful Blog

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

It is almost a necessity for an online business owner to have a blog these days. There are all types of blogs out there: informative blogs, personal blogs, and marketing jobs, to name a few. Now businesses have to compete using these blogs to receive a higher ranking in the search engines.

In order to have a successful blog, you will need to insure that it is well-written. You will also have to check to make sure it is designed well and that you can update it frequently and regularly. You need to take the time to research and know your audience before you start so you can be sure to target them appropriately.

But what if you are not trying to start a blog for business purposes? How can you create a blog that is successful if you just want to have a blog? There are some tips you can apply to help insure that your blog will do well.

First of all, select your topic. Since you aren’t using your blog for marketing your product, you can write about anything that appeals to you. You can use a blog as your own personal online journal or you can use it as your forum to comment on the news. Just be sure to choose something you are passionate about, something that you know well, and something that will allow you a chance to show the world the real you with all your talents, knowledge, and ideas.

Secondly, write your blog as if you were conversing with a friend. Make your writing conversational and free from a lot of technical jargon, unless you are directing it only towards a very specific readership. Post frequently because having more content on your blog will help more people to find it through search engines.

Use your blog to get your opinions out to the world. You are not moderated and you are free to express yourself in whatever way you choose. However, do not use your blog to insult people or try to damage businesses or organizations.

Be wise in the decisions you make regarding your blog usage. Remember that you are influencing people’s views and they will be evaluating your credibility. If you are offensive, you may lose readership.

Finally, take time to promote your blog. Don’t be afraid to keep the URL for your blog in the signature line of your emails. You never know when an email might cross the path of someone who might be interested in what you have to say.

If you publish a newsletter, be sure to promote it there as well. Finally, you can join blog directories and post the link there or join forums related to your topic and share your link with others.

If you do consider using a blog for business purposes, realize that it needs frequent updating and good, solid content. Some people consider paying someone to maintain the content aspect of the blog once it has been created.

Many people make extra money serving as content writers and prove to be beneficial to blog owners.

You Really Can Make A Million On The Internet

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The key to successful marketing on the internet is to drive traffic to your website. Having a website that just sits un-promoted in cyberspace is not only a waste of time, but also highly frustrating.

I have been intrigued by the idea of internet marketing for years, but it has taken me a long time to overcome all the gumption traps involved in actually getting started (the biggest one being that I am a cyber-dinosaur — my only real experience using computers for anything other than glorified type-writing involved Fortran IV and IBM punch cards almost thirty years ago).

What I have learned is that the internet marketing process can be relatively simple. You have to find a market, develop a product, and build a website to promote your product and process transactions. But, all of your efforts will be useless if nobody visits your website.

I have been studying a course that discusses the problem of driving traffic to your site in great detail. There are at least six ways to increase the number of visitors to your site, including word of mouth from one web user to the next (you are reading this letter, aren’t you?), buying targeted hits to your site using paid keyword advertising on search engines such as Google, sending advertising e-mails to your proprietary list of prospects which you generate by signing up previous visitors to your site, exchanging links for your website with other websites that have similar products to your own, paying someone else with a proprietary e-mail list to send sales letters for you (you can pay for this with a flat fee up front or in the form of commissions that result from the e-mails they send), and paying fees or commissions to other websites for putting your banners, ads, or links on their pages. By using these techniques you will increase the number of visitors to your site, which is almost guaranteed to increase your sales.

In addition to pointers on increasing website traffic, the course I am studying includes incredible amounts of information about many other topics. It is a free course (amazing, but true!) which covers every aspect of marketing on the internet. It covers material from the very basic to the very complex, including the nuts and bolts of building a website, the basic ideas behind the concept of selling on the web, and strategies for finding the right niche for marketing specific products. It is a tremendous resource for the beginning marketer, and is full of not well known tips for even the most experienced internet marketing experts.

Your Internet Marketing Made Easy

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Marketing online has become the preferred method of promotion and advertising for both web and home businesses. Internet marketing gives business owners the opportunity to target their chosen audience, while often receiving instant results. To accomplish your goals in the internet marketing field, you must first familiarize yourself with general promotional and marketing facts. Just a few simple tips can help you build your business into all that you desire.

To produce a significant income from your business, you must first find a way to gain visitors to your web site. Generating traffic is very important in internet marketing. It is a good idea to visit other web sites with a similar audience as yours to aid in the development of your internet marketing plan. Affiliate programs are an ideal source of traffic generation, as well as, web site advertising. As the internet expands, so do the many ways to bring customers to your site.

The word “free” is one of the most powerful internet marketing tools ever. Offering a free trial or sample on your web site is the perfect way to get potential customers excited about your business. As in any marketing plan, creativity is a must. If you are not able to dish out any free goodies, why not create a special offer or discount? It is essential that this offer is only offered at your site; this shows that you are willing to try something different from other business owners. Innovation can be the key to success in the internet marketing game.

Developing an honest and solid reputation in the business community is a necessity. Customers need to feel secure purchasing from you, and not worry about disclosing their personal information through your servers. Most consumers look for a seal of approval such as the Better Business Bureau Online icon. Once customers trust you, your business and internet marketing aspirations can continue to prosper.
