What’s The Big Deal About Google’s BigDaddy Update?

Every few months Google updates the algorithm it uses to rank websites in its index. Some of these updates are more significant than others, but because of Google’s market leading position these updates can be extremely significant to many online businesses.

Internet Marketers assign names to these updates much the same way the weather service names hurricanes. Last October it was Jagger, before that we had the infamous Florida Update in late 2003, and Austin in early 2004.

Each update is designed to improve search results by either doing a better job of identifying high-quality content on the Internet, or by doing a better job of suppressing low-quality content.

Over the last two or three weeks, many website owners have seen traffic to their sites from Google fluctuate quite a bit. This is normal for algorithm updates – as the index is updated on one data center, a site will change positions. The fluctuations occur because the index in the new data center is not completely built, and therefore a site may be placed artificially high or low until all the data is brought into equilibrium.

A few days ago, Google completed a major overhaul of its algorithm – this one dubbed BigDaddy and in the world of search engine updates it’s a category 5 hurricane; well, sort of.

You see, after all the turmoil of the past three weeks or so, most marketers are probably seeing their websites ranked more or less where they were about a month ago. This is unusual. Usually major algorithm changes result in significant changes in site rankings for virtually all sites on the Internet. Both the Florida and Jagger updates changed the landscape of Google’s Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) dramatically.

So, What’s the Big Deal About BigDaddy?

At first glance, the BigDaddy update seems to be much ado about nothing. However, there are some welcome changes that have been included in this update that should make Google a much friendlier place for those of us who build valuable content-rich websites.

* Increasing size and scope of the index – One of the purposes of this latest update was to increase the size of the index itself. This will allow Google to dig deeper into your site and catalog even more of your content (HTML, JavaScripts, Flash, etc).
* URL Canonicalization – Yes, it’s a scary word, but it’s actually quite simple. Essentially, canonicalization is determining which URL is the most appropriate for a given page. For example, the following URLs are all valid ways of reaching the homepage of SomeWebsite.com:
- http://www.somewebsite.com
- http://somewebsite.com
- http://www.somewebsite.com/index.asp
- http://somewebsite.com/index.asp
By improving URL Canonicalization, Google is attempting to make sure your site gets credit even though the URLs might be spelled differently on different websites.
* No More Page Hijacking – Although not a common problem, there are unscrupulous jerks out there who will find a popular site and hijack it’s content by using 302 redirects. Google is attempting to eliminated the ability to do this effectively – hopefully they are succeeding.
* New Spider – You will also see a new Google spider called Mozilla Bot instead of the old familiar GoogleBot. If you are into looking at server logs, the new agent is “Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)
* Less Search Engine Spam – continuing with the recent trends, Google seems hell-bent on eliminating the effectiveness of purchased keywords and link farms. If you are still employing these “black-hat” techniques, then you probably just found out about the BigDaddy update the hard way. If you didn’t, then you will probably be hearing from BigDaddy soon.

BigDaddy Foretells More Changes To Come

In the immediate aftermath of a major update like BigDaddy, there are a number of things you can expect to happen.

The first is that your website’s PageRank (PR) will probably change over the next few weeks. If you’ve been doing the things that Google likes, then you will likely see your PR improve, if you are engaged in unscrupulous (by Google’s standards) activities, then you can expect your PR to go down. To see a list of what Google likes visit http://www.google.com/webmasters/.
In addition, some of your site’s older content will be re-crawled and older, unlinked content will probably be removed from the index.
Over the next few months, there will also likely be a series of smaller updates that will take advantage of the new “infrastructure” provided by the BigDaddy update. Flash-heavy sites that were held artificially low may move up in the rankings while sites that rely heavily on reciprocal linking will likely go down.

BigDaddy – Not Such A Big Deal
In short, as long as you are not engaged in “Black-hat SEO”, BigDaddy itself is probably no cause for alarm. If your site has recently bounced around in Google’s results, then you will notice that things have probably returned to normal in the last week or so, and your rankings have probably improved a little bit.

Moving forward, in the next few weeks you can expect changes to your PageRank, and perhaps deeper crawls by Google’s new spider, “Mozilla Bot”. In the next few months there will likely be a number of smaller updates, mostly pertaining to issues like Flash content and niche-specific algorithm changes.

As with all algorithm changes, there is no reason to panic just because “BigDaddy” blew through town. Like hurricanes in the real world, algo changes blow a lot of loose material around; but if your website’s foundation is sound, you will weather the storm and be ready for business once the storm has passed.

Yahoo Sandbox Escape

Many people claim that there is no such a thing as Sandbox in Google and Yahoo. Google’s representative even came out and denied the ‘Sandbox’ concept. Sandbox effect is just too obvious to deny. They are just playing the words. Yes you can say that there is no such thing as a ‘Sandbox’, but there is a fact that new websites don’t rank well in competitive keywords. So, the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer is really depends on the definition of what a ‘Sandbox’ is.

In the SEO industry, almost everyone knows a newly registered domain doesn’t rank well in competitive keywords. These new baby websites can still rank well or even become number one search result in some niche keyword phrases. A little earlier I talked about how to have a Google Sandbox escape in the other article, now I would like to talk about Yahoo Sandbox escape to help new websites to rank well in competitive terms.

Google is more machine based, so what you need is to play with their algorithm. Yahoo is a relatively more commercial search engine. As you can notice their search result has more commercial sites on the top 10 results while Google has more non-commercial sites. Although Yahoo heavily relies on the machine to get the search result, it still manually changes the results to reach Yahoo’s best interested. In the contrast, Google almost totally reply on its calculations and data without manual input on getting the search results. So when you search for ‘search engine’, Google does not appear as the number one in their own result!

For a Yahoo Sandbox escape, you might need to spend some money on there directories. Although Yahoo directories are not appearing in the Yahoo front page anymore, people still use it for search. And the greatest thing about directory listing is that you can almost immediately (a few days) jump from number 260 to top 20 for a competitive keyword after your site is included in their directories. And you actually get real traffic from these listings. The directory would give you not only one link but at least 8 links. For example, you are listed in ‘oil painting’ category. You would be listed in oil painting category of Yahoo US, Australia, Canada, India, Philippine… For Yahoo, you know you are a VIP because you will rank exceptionally well compare to your competitors with the same amount of back links.

What frustrates me is your title and description in Yahoo search will be changed. Yahoo stuff would manually make a title and description for your page. And your title would often appear to be your domain name. If your domain name doesn’t have anything to do with your content topic, the searcher might not click into your site even though you are the top search result. What can you do? After you have build a lot of quality back links and your site has grown old, you cancel the listing.

Solving The Adwords Puzzle

There are many different ways to market on the Internet these days, but this article is going to primarily focus on using the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) method with Google’s AdWords.

Using PPC has become more and more of a challenge as additional people have found their way into Internet marketing. So how do we beat all the competition out there? Well, for starters, we need to focus on using Google AdWords simply because it has a higher amount of search results. So lets log on to Google and get started.

The first thing that we need to do is create a PPC campaign. The best way to write a quality ad is to view other ads that get a lot of search results. So we need to go to Google and do a search for the same type of ad we are going to be placing. For example, if we were going to write an ad for a work at home business we would simple type “work at home” into a Google search. To make our search pull up the best ads possible we need to add a keyword to our search that doesn’t make sense i.e. “work at home pizza” By doing this, only the best ads will show up for the “work at home” keywords. Now all we need to do is simply write two ads similar to these and we will be ready for the next step.

Next, we need to find the best keywords related to our advertisement, the more keywords the better. There are many different tools out there on the Internet that can be used to help generate a list of keywords. Yahoo Search Marketing (YSM) has a great keyword tool that we can use to help build our list. All we need to do is enter a keyword or a phrase such as “work at home” and a list will come up with the most popular searches related to our keyword. We then need to take these related keywords and use them to help build our list. We can also take the plural forms of our keywords to help build our list as well as switch some of our keyword phrases around. For example, change “work at home” to “home at work” or “business opportunity” to “business opportunities.”

Now that we have our list of keywords we need to put a good pricing strategy in place. If we go to YSM there is a tool that can be used to see the different bid prices for given keywords. We simple need to look up the bid prices other people are using to find a competitive price for our keywords, though we need to make sure this makes sense when it comes to the return on our investment.

We are now finally ready to run our ad. Take the two ads we have written and start the campaign. After a few weeks of running the ads we will be able to see which ad is being more effective. Then we will write another ad in place of the bad one to continue to develop the best ad. Now we are finally ready to drive some serious traffic to our business.
