Forums - Why Join?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

With intensified boom of forums nowadays, you may find yourself asking “What do these online communities have that they are slowly but surely spreading like wildfire?”

For starters, let us name a few good things one can get from joining in forums.

First and foremost, the reason why forums are so popular is because they are engaging. In a forum, “forumers” are given the maximum real person to people interaction. Unlike Chats or Instant Messaging, a forum can let a person interact with not just one or two persons; in a forum, you can practically let the entire world know about what you think or feel. And what is more beautiful is that there can be anonymity in a forum. Well, being anonymous has its own advantages and disadvantages but let us not dwell on it. The important thing about it is that, in a forum, you can choose to be or not to be anonymous.

Another very nice thing about forums is that they provide participants the feeling of community and kinship with other forum members. Even if at times, you may not know each other, it is comforting to know that you share things in common. In most instances, participants really develop connection; we are not talking about internet connection but a real personal connection. Sometimes, conversations just don’t end up in the forums; others may even correspond in emails and end up talking on the phone. In other words, by participating in a forum, access to companionship, acquaintances, closeness and even relationships, is easy.

Aside from the social interactions happening in forums, there are also forums that are more into the professional side and/or forums that target a specific community such as forums for the marketing community, for the writing community, for oppressed women, for women in general, and even for specific societies and organizations. The same thing goes for this kind of forums; people interact, share ideas, plans, help and support each other and/or simply talk to each other. The only difference is that they mostly talk about a specific topic. For instance, a forum for women only talks about issues that are unique to women such as PMS, menopause, make-up tips, women’s career and the like.

I cannot resist adding this too. For people with something to plug or sell, joining in forums is also a good way to introduce your service or product, either blatantly or by making use of the signature feature in the forums.

The usefulness of forums are too many to mention. Suffice it to say, in a forum, the interaction is limitless. You can ask for advice, give advice, share experiences, help others, gain friends, or just simply connect with other people in the most convenient way possible,

There are so many forums nowadays — from marketing forums, women’s forums, love forums, writing forums, self help forums, support group forums etc. etc. and it is not surprising that the number of participants also rise with the number of forums. It just goes to show that people need people, for interaction, for fun, for opinion, for relationships, or for anything else - there’s always a forum for it.

Five Reasons To Do Wireless Networking.

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I believe that wireless networks represent one of the most significant inventions in human history – almost as important as sliced bread.

Now, seriously, bread is certainly easy enough to cut yourself, but try to wire up a network and you will think of this invention in a different way.

Just to make the whole picture clearer for you, let me give you five reasons why using a wireless network is definitely worth it.

Sharing Web Access

With wireless networking, you can easily and cheaply share one single Internet connection among different computers, without having to use more modems. If that wasn’t enough, you can even include new computers in your network only by using a wireless card and switching them on to have an immediate Internet connection! Not many wired networks would be able to do that.

Sharing Printers and Files

A wireless network guarantees access to your files regardless of where you are within your house, and with a home computer it also facilitates the synchronization of data on a laptop. Using wireless networks makes it so much simpler to send files between computers as compared to the traditional emails or CDs.

Moreover, if your printer is connected, you can write your documents anywhere you want and finally print them through a printer connected to another computer. In other words, a printer plugged into one of the computers on the network is available to all the computers saving you the expense of having multiple printers at home.

Playing Games Online

As might have already seen, games have often the option to play over a LAN. As previously mentioned, wireless networks are LANs, meaning that people can play together without having to be physically near each other.

Isn’t it more exciting to play with your family and friends instead of unknown people on the Internet and be able to make the whole game work much faster? Actually, you can even ask your friends to bring their own computers in and join a thrilling ‘LAN party’!

With wireless networking you can easily connect any games you wish to play to the Internet, and start playing online. Playing online with a wirelessly connected to Xbox or PlayStation 2 is definitely simpler than having to use your modem for connection all the time.

Always On Access

What made the spread of broadband possible was that it let Internet connections be constantly on, eliminating the need of dialing in all the time. With wireless networking, network connections are always on, so that every time you wish, any of your computers is able to connect to the Internet!

Regardless of where you take your laptops to within your home, they will have instant access! Moreover, wireless networks offer you the convenience of eliminating usernames and password systems, as they operate without logging in. Talk about convenience!

No More Wire Running Everywhere!

Being able to eliminate wires from running all over your house is probably the biggest reason why you should turn your network to wireless. Believe me, you will be so pleased when you get rid of problematic, costly, ugly and unsafe wires.

Although the average Ethernet wire doesn’t cost much, once you’ve bought the necessary quantity to do what you need to do, but getting everything you need for a wired LAN it adds up quickly.

Plus, whenever you wish to have wires running between rooms or floors, you are forced to have holes in the walls, which might not even possible if the house is not yours.

Many people living in rented apartments have to limit their network to a particular room until they finally decided to switch to wireless allowing them to even take their computers outside, if they wish to!

Using wireless networks also enables you to have more safety, as there is no danger of tripping over uncovered wires.

Furthermore, if you are moving, you do not have to pack all the wires up and re-connect them again. Finally, with wireless networks there’s no need for you to check every single wire if your Internet connection doesn’t work.

Are You Convinced Yet?

Hackers And Hoaxes

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Everyone who has an ISP, understands, or at least knows about how hackers use viruses, Trojans and other web nasties, to infect and mess up your computer. No headline news there. (Unfortunately, we still don’t understand why they do it, or at least I don’t.) But hackers don’t have to write malicious code or hijack your browser to do some serious damage to your system. Oh no… A well written email with no attachments, can do the trick. They only have to start a rumor.
Hackers can easily manipulate you into trashing your own computer. All they have to do is begin a hoax.

What do I mean by that? Let me explain.

Have you ever gotten emails from people you know that say something like: Scan your hard drive for such and such a file! If you find it delete it immediately! Pass this on. Warn everyone you know!

These emails are originally generated by a hacker and spread throughout the Internet to get you to delete files you need, thus creating havoc for your system. They are hoaxes.

Hoaxes work incredibly well for getting average people to cause their own computers to malfunction. the hacker doesn’t have to spend any time creating malicious code and a method of distribution, all they have to do is play on the human tendency for hysteria; send out a warning that something evil is spreading, and if you find it on your computer, get rid of it!

Recently I was tracking a thread on a forum, where the moderator warned everyone about a file that he found on his system that was a keylogger. (A keylogger is a malicious program designed to track your every move through monitoring your keystrokes.) He warned everyone to search for a file, ans2000.ini and, “delete the booger.”

I scan my system every day, with several different virus/ spyware programs, and I never picked up this file with any of them, so I decided to do a Windows Explorer search for it. Sure enough, I found it on my hard drive. Oh My God!

Before hitting the delete key though, I looked it up on the web. I Googled the specific file and found quite a bit of information on it. The file ans2000.ini is used in the keylogger program known as ProBot SE. However, it is also used in many other legitimate programs as well. Ok, so now what do I do?

Well, I contacted my go-to guy, Jim Gray, owner of Quikonnex, and asked him what his thoughts were. He told me to open the ini file, in Notepad, and read it. Sure enough, this file did have an association to another program on my system. It is part of ActivEbook Compiler. It was right there in print, at the top of the file.

Now had I just freaked out when I found the file, and deleted the booger, I would’ve trashed my ebook compiler, making it useless to me. Two points for the hacker who started the hoax!

Hoaxes are just as dangerous as live viruses, because they inspire you to destroy your own programs. I am sure they are a particular kick for the one starting the hoax, as they are getting you to do bad things to your own system. Fear is a powerful motivator, and hoaxes, by design, are created to cause panic and fear in the less experienced Internet traveler.

So, before going and deleting files from your hard drive, go check them out. Do a search for them and read the information you find. Don’t just go deleting things without learning about them first, or you just may end up cutting your own throat. And, NEVER forward these types of warning emails to others until you know for a fact that the information is correct, or you’re likely to have your friends and family after you for misinforming them.

Google And Sun - A Partnership To Kill Microsoft Or A Deal With The Devil?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

As you have probably already heard, Google and Sun have partnered up to distribute the Google Toolbar with Sun’s Java. While this may seem like a minor deal in the grand scheme of things, upon further reflection I find this could be the deal which will ultimately break Microsoft.

While the implications could be huge and far reaching, only Google knows for sure what it wants. We can speculate however and that’s what this article is all about. Is such a deal good for Sun (and Google) or is it a pact with the devil?

At first glance, such a deal doesn’t seem like much. After all java to most people is just a plug in for your Internet browser. What good would such a deal be to Google? Well lets take a look at what Java can do. The following is taken straight from Sun’s website:

The Java programming language is robust and versatile, enabling developers to:
Write software on one platform and run it on another.
Create programs to run within a web browser.
Develop server-side applications for online forums, stores, polls, processing HTML forms, and more.
Write applications for cell phones, two-way pagers, and other consumer devices.

Let me break this down for you – point by point:

Write software on one platform and run it on another

To me this says it all – platform independent applications. What is one thing Windows does well? The programs generally run only on Windows. Developers usually have to port applications to run on other operating systems like Mac or Linux. But an application built on Java can be run on any platform regardless of the architecture.

Create programs to run within a web browser

This is an area Google lacks in somewhat. Sure they own search and have some great web based applications such as Gmail, but there are so many potential other web based applications out there. From web based collaboration software to web based application suites (such as office applications). The possibilities are endless.

Develop server side applications

Again, since Java is platform independent, different types of server applications can be built for websites regardless of their operating system. An E-commerce system could be developed which would easily plug into a website whether it was ASP or PHP based. This would be a huge competitive advantage for Google.

Write applications for…consumer devices

Portable web is the future. There is no doubt about it. Rather than building mutiple platform dependent applications, one could again develop a java based platform independent application. Since it’s independent it can not only run on your desktop or within your web browser but also your cell phone, blackberry or PDA.

So, now that we know what Java can do, lets take a look at what Google can do with Java:

Compete on the Desktop

Virtually any application could be ported from it’s current Windows based version to a platform independent Java version. Even current Google applications like Picasa and Google Earth could now be available to non-Windows users.

Obviously, there is a potential to compete with current Microsoft products as well. The first that comes to mind is Microsoft Office. One would expect this to be one of the first areas Google moves into.

Imagine the potential though. I think of how good that would be just for me personally. My computer runs Fedora (a version of Redhat Linux) yet for other reasons (games) my son’s computer runs Windows XP.

When he needs help with homework it can be trying because he uses Microsoft software and I use open source. If we could collaborate on something which doesn’t care what OS it runs on, it would make our lives so much easier.

And that leads to my next point – collaboration.

Compete with future Microsoft products

One thing Microsoft has been getting better at, but is still lagging in, is online collaboration. Sure they have Exchange Server and Sharepoint, but those systems are somewhat cumbersome and don’t always play together nicely.

But imagine a system which is (again) platform independent and web based and allows collaboration among multiple users from different areas using a shared application base. The system could incorporate version control for shared documents, as well as calendaring, email and other communications.

This system could be hosted by Google (of course) but be open to who you want. In other words, you could openly collaborate with clients, or co workers regardless of what system you are using – you could connect and read email with your PDA, schedule appointments with your laptop and even have a Google Talk VOIP conversation with your cell phone. The possibilities are endless.

Take Over the Desktop

To go even a step further, what if Google built a small lightweight version of Linux that hosts links to web based versions of the Java applications. You could then have this light Google Linux stored on a USB device.

That way, no matter what computer you use, you could reboot it into the USB version of Google’s Desktop and have all your customizations and settings just like you would at home or the office.

You could borrow your neighbors laptop or even go to the local Internet cafe and reboot into “Glinux” to read email, respond to appointments and even have a virtual conference via Google IM.

Again, depending on how aggressive Google wants to be (and I bet you they are very aggressive) Google could become a viable alternative to Microsoft. And not just Microsoft applications but Microsoft as a whole.

Google could take over the desktop (or at least temporarily supplant it) as well as any MS based application.

This is the true power of the deal today. While it make take months or years to see the first “real” Google/Sun java application, I do expect to see them taking aim at Microsoft and what it has accomplished.

Because this is still all in line with Google’s mission of making the worlds information universally accessible.

All I can say is I hope Bill Gates has a big enough war chest because he’s going to need it.

Five Effective Ways Of Making Money Out Of Web Templates

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Web templates are the in-thing now-a-days and most of them are selling like hot cakes resulting into huge profits for web template providers. You too can cash-in on this web template craze and make money. Discussed in this article are five effective ways of making money out of web templates.

Five effective ways to make money out of web templates

1.) Creating turnkey pages from web templates

Turnkey websites are the hottest resource on the internet. If you are a web designer, web hosting company or simply own a website you can make good money by creating turnkey websites from readymade web templates.

What are turn key websites?

Turnkey websites are completely functional websites having relevant content, domain names and hosting. Depending on the type, turnkey websites can have shopping carts, interactive scripts, graphics forms, forums, live chats etc. All that a buyer needs to do is buy the website and he is ready to do business.

What you need to do?

In order to set up a turn key website business, you need to do the following;

1) Purchase professional looking web templates with resell rights or join a template membership program

2.) Modify the web templates by adding relevant content, links, images and graphics

3.) Purchase domain names and hosting accounts

4) Host the completed web templates as websites

5) Advertise/promote your websites for sale/rent by SEO and Email marketing

What will be your ROI?
You ROI Will surely be very high. This is because of the fact that the retail value of turnkey websites is around $200 - $500 per website and can also go higher based on the website quality. You can also go for renting your websites instead of selling them. As you will be purchasing web-templates for a cheaper cost your ROI will be higher. The best way to go about it is by joining membership programs that will give you access to a host of http://www.buytemplates.netweb templates at a low one time cost. Also make sure to host your sites with hosting service providers who offer unlimited domain name hosting. One good example of a turnkey website service is ready-set-web.com.
2.) Joining an affiliate program
Affiliate programs are quite popular over the net. If you have a well ranking website with a good traffic margin then you can very well join an affiliate program offered by many if not all web template providers. All that you need to do is promote their templates and you can make easy money in the form of commissions.
What you need to do?
In order to join an affiliate program you need to register yourself for the program. As soon as the registration process is over you will receive a link or banner advert that you can place on your website at strategic places. In case your website visitor clicks the banner and makes the purchase you get a part of the commission. Commissions can range from 2% to 10% of the actual sales proceeds. Most companies use tracking software programs or individual services like clicksgalore, commission junction etc. for tracking sales.

Some good web template providers who offer affiliate programs are buytemplates.net, templatehunter.com, templatemagic.net and webzonetemplates.com Before joining an affiliate program make sure that the template provider offers allied/complimentary services like web hosting, search engine optimization, content insertion, domain name registration, template customization etc. In fact the more the complimentary services offered the better will be your returns.

3.) Reselling/redistributing web templates

If you own a website that attracts good traffic or is likely to attract traffic in the future, you can go for purchasing templates as a bulk and reselling them. To get redistribution rights all that you need to do is purchase reseller templates that many web template providers offer today. Some good web template vendors who offer reseller templates are http://www.buytemplates.net , http://www.templatemagic.net and freewebsitetemplates.com. Purchasing reseller templates on your own and reselling them can fetch you more returns than by joining an affiliate program.

What you need to do?

All that you need to do is purchase web templates that come with resell rights. You can then modify the templates and sell them to potential customers with non-exclusive rights. You certainly need not be a html pro to start this business; instead you can partner with template providers who offer related services like template customization, hosting, SEO etc. and earn good commissions by referring your customers to them.

4.) Joining Referral based programs

Referral programs are very unlike affiliate programs in the sense that they do not involve you to place links or banner ads on your site. This is basically a word of mouth program and requires you to promote products by word-of-mouth. In case a customer referred by you joins a membership program or buys a web template and refers your name in the referral section, you get a commission. But such referral programs are offered by very few template vendors today.

5.) Web designing with web templates

If you are a professional web designer you can earn higher returns by making use of web templates. Firstly you can satisfy your clients with the speed at which you complete the work and at the same time get more ROI as the readymade website templates are way cheap. All that you need to do is buy exclusive templates and resell them after making modifications. One way to go about it is by joining membership programs offered by web template providers. This will give you access to a host of web templates at a one time cost. Most web designers can almost double their profits, take care of multiple projects and also retain customers by making
