The Domain Names 101

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Without a domain name, websites are specified with an IP address. What’s an IP address? It’s an identifier that is used through computers or humans to determine the surroundings of a server or website. On the other hand, for humans, an IP address, (which is expressed in a numerical format), could be not easy to bear in mind. This is why domain names were invented. By a domain name, a human could search a internet site through more user-friendly words or phrases. And although numbers can be a part of a domain name, they normally do not make up all of it, like what is seen with an IP address.

In terms of format, domain names have several parts. The 1st part is known as the URL, (which stands for Uniform Resource Locator). The URL tells the browser what the domain name is intended for point to. This will normally be ‘http’, which means the browser could expect to obtain a hypertext document. In layman’s terms this means webpage. In the rare cases the URL is not ‘http’ it may be ‘ftp’, which means file transfer protocol. A webmaster would opt to purpose ftp if they will love traffic to download files from their server.

The 2nd part of the domain name would be “www,” which stands for “Globe Wide Web.” This phrase lets computers and humans know the site the domain name is pointing to is indeed from the Internet. It’s followed with the actual domain name, which could be a combination of letters, numbers or phrases. A great domain name would be short, memorable and lots of importantly, look-engine friendly. In fact, good webmasters tend to concentrate more on a domain name’s effectiveness with SEO, (or Search Engine Optimization), than they do its creativity. To do this they make sure to select a domain name that possesses a widely searched keyword.

The last portion of the domain name has what is known as an extension. This offers a person know a little bit extra about a internet site’s origins. For sample, select .com, the most common domain name extension. It stands for ‘commercial’, & was originally bound for organizations in that vein. However, nowadays the extension is used by virtually everybody looking to create a internet site. And this is for good purpose, since most web surfers would consider about the .com before they would think about .org, .biz or .net. Yet, do not consider the other extensions can’t become memorable either. Think Wikipedia.org which is a wildly popular website despite its .org extension.

Domain name extensions could also show things on a geographical level. An sample are country-based extensions such as .fr, (which stands for France), or .jp, (which stands for Japan). They can also be state-based, for example .ca, (which stands for California). Both could serve as excellent tools for localized Internet marketing.

To get a domain name, a people could either: 1) reach one from their web hosting company, provided they provide that service or 2) achieve one from a separate domain name company. Price-wise things would vary through both options, even though naturally the cost will range from $6.50 to $35. Parents Of Child Actors - Register A Domain Name FAST!

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Your child has done the hard part, breaking into show business, and the last thing on your mind as a parent is that somebody would try to use your child’s newfound fame to their advantage.

Your loss is their gain.

I recommend registering your child’s domain name as soon as your child a) works as a principal character in a TV show or film (has a credit on screen) or b) signs with an agent or manager. The reason for doing this as soon as possible is obvious: there are people out there who register domains of newcomers at the earliest opportunity. If you think to yourself “but my kid isn’t famous yet” you are kidding yourself. There is a segment of the population that will immediately notice a new girl or boy on a TV show and immediately start posting their name around the Internet for other people to see.

So what is a domain name and how do you register one?

A domain name is the “internet address” you use to find a particular web site. The domain name for the web site you are on now is “kidsinthebiz.com.” A popular domain name for a search engine is “google.com.” Most actors will register their domain name as “firstnamelastname.com.” There are also domain names that end in .us, .tv, .net, .org and hundreds more. Concentrate on the .com extension. Can you register a domain name if you don’t even have a web site? YES! In fact, many parents will simply register their child’s domain name and “park” it - not use it, just so somebody else can’t take it. They may or may not ever make a web site, but they know that somebody else can’t pretend to be their child with the domain name either.

One of the best places to register a domain name is a place called Go Daddy. It’s a funny name but one of the best. GoDaddy.com is known as a domain name registrar, a place to register domain names. Once you are at their site, type your child’s name (wthout spaces) into the “Start Your Search Here” box and click on “Go.” If the domain hasn’t been taken yet, click on Continue. You will be asked to buy a whole bunch of stuff you really don’t need so click on “No Thanks” to continue. You will then be asked to buy even more things, so just click on Continue again. You may have some things auto-selected for you like “Traffic Builder” - uncheck it and click on Continue again.

Eventually you will get to a checkout page that will have you double-check everything to make sure it is correct, as well as choose a payment method. If there is anything else in your cart besides the domain name, remove it! For 2 years it should only cost you about $18.40.

You can choose to pay by PayPal or by Credit Card. Select which one and then also put check marks into the boxes saying you have read the agreement and terms of service. (I suggest actually reading them too, although they are pretty standard) - then click on Checkout Now.

The next section will require you to put in personal information. IMPORTANT - this information will be public, and once it is out there, people CAN bring it uyp again even if you change it. For the telephone number I would suggest your agent or managers number, NOT your private home phone number. Cell phone is also fine if you don’t mind - but you will probably get calls on it. For address, again put your agent or manager’s address, or a post office box if you have one. If you put your real home address, remember this will be available for everybody to see.

Continue the checkout process. Once everything is done, that is it. Your domain is now officially “parked” and will be on the Internet in 4-24 hours. When people call up the domain name in their web browser, they will see godaddy’s “parked” page. If you ever build a web site for your child, or have someone build it for you, you will need to modify the settings in the GoDaddy control panel. Your web designer / web host should be able to help you with that.

Securing your child’s domain name early means it won’t be stolen later. Use your own judgment for when you feel it is the right time. Remember, if the .com is taken, you can try one of the other extensions, but even today, nothing is as good as a .com.

Make Your Domain Name More Valuable With A Web Hosting Plan And Bring In More Cash Online.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Most of the time, a domain that you purchase will need help in order to make it worth money. You may be thinking about how to do this and one way to increase the worth of your domain greatly is to establish a web site on it to give it a web presence.

Putting a web site on your domain name doesn’t need to cost you a fortune, because in the end, when you are about to sell your domain, you will want to make money on it for all of your effort. One thing to keep in mind when you are planning a web site to give your domain a jump on the web is that you have to keep the web site relevant to the name of the domain. This is important to get traffic to your web site. It all has to do with SEO, but we are not talking about that right now. Please read on.

There are multiple plans of hosting. You have your hosting all the way at the top which is called dedicated hosting and then you have your smaller plans that still have outstanding features, called shared hosting. All that shared hosting means is that you are sharing a server with other web site owners. You will never know they are there, it’s just a shared server thing and it’s a lot less money than dedicated.

There are numerous hosting providers out there. They are all different priced and all have something a little different to offer than the next. There are a smidgen of services that I recommend though mostly due to the fact that they have great features and outstanding prices. One thing I really hope you get in this business is that in order to make money in domaining, you will need to save as much money as possible and when you are buying hosting, this is important.

You do not need to purchase dedicated hosting for a small site and most of the time, even a site that gets more visitors. Shared hosting is more than enough, as long as they do not limit your bandwidth or disk space. Let me spin you some options to consider. The first one I recommend is a hosting provider by the name of Host Gator. They really have some great plans. They have 3 different shared plans, for whichever suits your needs more, and every plan comes with 51+ software options with things like wordpress, joomla, and so much more. They also have web site templates at your disposal for free which makes life that much easier if you are not a designer or developer. There is also a promo code that I will share with you that allows you to take advantage of their hosting and get the first month for 1 cent. The promo code is hgc25 and you enter it at the checkout screen in the order form. It’s really a great code.

The second hosting provider I suggest you use, is Fat Cow. It’s another awesome hosting provider. They also have software options and they are absolutely cheaply priced. They offer you web site hosting for $66 per year. That turns out to be about $4 and some change per month. But the difference between Host Gator and Fat Cow is that Host Gator offers you month to month payment and Fat Cow does not.

But now that you see how cheap hosting can be, I suggest you do put a web site on your domain for reasons I will shortly name. For one, unless you put a web site on your domain, nobody will know your domain exists. That’s no good. What makes a domain worth money is the visitors that it receives or if it’s brandable. Brandable names are difficult to sell because you need to find someone who is interested in buying that brand name. Understand? So it all comes down down to traffic. Traffic is important to the profitability of your domain and a web site will give it web presence which will turn into visitors and page rank and alexa rank.

So if you are understanding the concept of using hosting to boost the worth of your domain, I suggest you look into hosting. I have named two of the biggest named shared hosting providers out there, and I have used each. One more comment about Host Gator before I end the post. Their customer service is second to none. They are absolutely incredible. They also offer online tech support through chat which is nice, so you can always get in touch with them.

So think about what was spoken about, and thanks for reading the post. It’s important stuff, boring, but important and most of the time must be done. Of course unless you hold a highly coveted domain name.

‘Till next time.

Choosing A Quality Web Host

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

If you are individual enjoy me, you’d current love to have a website on the Internet but you fitting have no impression how to lick about it. All this introduction of net hosting, bandwidth, tape space, and other jargon can cause one to say, “This is too complicated and technical, I just wanted to have a place to put all of my favorite skateboarding photos, cool information on ramp designs, and the best places to skate!” To get a website on the Web you have to go through a web host. The question is how do you find the web host for you? If you type ‘web host’ into your search engine like Google you will get thousands of sites. Hit on one of these and like any product on the market you will see all sorts of persuasive propaganda to incite you to use their company; that is if you can decipher any of the technical jargon that only computer-heads can comprehend.

Some web hosts offer free business cards with an account; some probably offer free watches?like all consumer industries you the buyer must beware. I’m a writer so I’ll use the analogy of a writer’s journal. The journal I like must not be too big or small in book size. It also must have a good amount of space allocated to each day, again not a whole page but not just a few lines. Of course I also want it to be cheap but of a good quality that won’t fall apart while I’m using it, and I hope it would last for posterity. I just want the diary, some nice pictures in it are O.K. but unnecessary especially if it adds to the price. It’s the same with a web host and web site scenario. You want to get the right deal for you, enough space and enough access to the public that you wish to associate with. As a novice who doesn’t understand all the jargon this can pose a problem. Are you an individual, small business, blog, or a big time corporation? What do you need and how do you get it? As far as I can tell the web hosting business is a lot like the fast food business.

The big corporations have strict guidelines, will offer you special deals, and have monthly ‘cheeseburger specials’. But, I’ve always been more interested in the ‘Mom and Pop’ small time diners who have that real caring human approach. You know you are a customer and a person, not just a number on a sales receipt. I believe the hosting companies are the same. A smaller hosting company will probably treat its users with more honest integrity as well as having more flexibility in dealing with your individual situation. They can often tailor web site packages to accommodate exactly what you are looking for as well as the ability to update them quickly when your needs change. My advice is to contact a few of the smaller companies.

Look for ones with good reputations or just arbitrarily email them and compare results from different places. Which one do you feel most comfortable with? Go for it; ask as many questions as you can, see how the different hosts differ in their answers. Try one; if it doesn’t work out try another, it’s really easy to move around. Don’t be afraid, you’ve got nothing to lose except the fear itself!

Invest Smartly By Using Coupon Code

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Website or blog is the term people are looking for. Everyone wants to get their own website or a blog. In the early days, creating a website was very hard, people don’t have much knowledge so creating themselves was not an easy task and if they hire some professional then they have to spend a lot of amount to have one but those days were gone. Nowadays you can have one by spending very less amount. There is lot of competition is this website market. Many intelligent web designers are creating website at very cheap price in order to attract a client. Plus there are many software’s available in the market which helps people to create any kind of website easily. With the help of wordpress, one of the best content management solutions, people are at sky creating beautiful and successful websites. I too have lot of blogs in the wordpress platform. You can even create a free blog at a blogger platform.

To create a website or a blog, you will first need to register a domain. There are thousands of domain registrar companies. You will need to find few good ones. Currently Godaddy.com, namecheap.com, name.com etc are good ones. Normally the price of domains ranges from $7-$10. You can also get a cheaper domain with extension .info in the range of $1-$2 but I won’t recommend it because this .info extension is not much popular. You can also use coupon code or discount code while buying a domain. You will get around 5% - 10% discount in the original price. Utilize the namecheap coupon code for September 2009.

All domain registrar company doesn’t give a discount, one few of them offer. Among them namecheap is one such domain provider. But in case of web hosting the case is different. There is always a discount for new users who opens a web hosting account. Although many web hosting won’t reveal a coupon code. If you are new and don’t know anything about such coupon code then you will surely buy at the rate mentioned in the site. That’s really a stupid thing to do. Before buying a web hosting account, you first try communicating with them, ask them if they provide any coupon code for the first time user. They surely will give you one. Famous web hosting providers like hostgator write the coupon code in their site itself eliminating all the bothering. You will usually get a coupon code of around 10% - 20% off in your initial payment price. You can make a payment for 1 year to 10 years. The higher you choose the better discount you will get. Remember many companies don’t give coupon code for renewal.

The main motive of this article is to use the coupon code while registering domain as well as a web hosting for saving some money. That’s really a smart investment. Cheer’s up.
